Promotional Testing

In addition to the entry-level process, the office provides promotional testing services for all ranks through chief. The services include written examinations, oral board examinations, and assessment centers. The selection of a specific written instrument is made after a review of the current job description. A reading list is provided several weeks before the written examination to allow sufficient time for preparation.

SCCJA also administers promotional oral board examinations and assessment entries. Police professionals are chosen from all throughout the state to sit on these panels. The office works with vendors to tailor assessment services and interactive exercises to meet department needs.

Training

Police chiefs and seconds-in-command in South Central Connecticut are bound by the state mandate of sixty hours of in-service training every three years. As per the approval of the SCCoP (The South Central Chiefs of Police), South Central Criminal Justice Administration develops training for executive managers and coordinates its delivery. The training is structured so that executive managers who attend all sessions will meet their state mandates while simultaneously receiving instruction on current management topics.

The office also provides recertification training for police officers. The training is offered for one week per month throughout the year except in July and August.

Regional Coordination

  • South Central Chiefs of Police Association – correspondence, networking, and financial services
  • South Central Area Network – regional voice communication system for special events, dignitary visits, backup for primary department channel, and emergency services
  • State of Connecticut Liaison – technology applications for criminal justice, including information sharing
  • Federal Liaison – facilitate information exchange and staffing for joint task forces

Research

It is clear that modern managers need to be able to locate and analyze information that is meaningful to their decision-making. Recognizing this need, SCCJA continues to develop its research capability. The office maintains updated files on police policies and procedures, as well as a compendium of local police labor agreements. Internet links have been established with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Executive Research Forum, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the Department of Justice, and selected police departments throughout the country to acquire information on relevant subjects. SCCJA staff has also developed expertise in conducting surveys among police agencies in the state.
